Last week, we wondered whether ousted girlfriend-slashing state senator Hiram Monserrate was simply running against gays in his bid to win reelection to his seat next Tuesday. Judging by this pamphlet his supporters are handing out, which urges voters not to pick his opponent, Jose Peralta (who is backed by wealthy LGBT groups gunning for Monserrate), because he is a “leading spokesman for the gay community” and, more simply, a “gay caballero,” it seems pretty clear. Of course, this strategy assumes that the evangelicals this is aimed at dislike gay people enough to vote against them and for a convicted girlfriend abuser — which is far from a sure thing. [NYDN]
