According to the Times, which profiled gay college-recruiting events for its “Education Life” section, it doesn’t. “Being gay does not lend an advantage, and the embrace is not universal inside admissions offices,” writes Josh Schwartz. But more and more students are including gay story lines in their admissions essays, and there are a lot of scholarship programs specifically for LGBT youth. The very existence of gay-targeted recruiting events raises the question: When schools pick and choose candidates for a “diverse campus,” including giving different weights to race, economic status, and geographic background, where does being gay fit in? If we’d written this story for the Times, that is what we’d have wanted to know.
