NYC to Begin Collecting Rent From Homeless With Jobs

New York City’s homeless people who have jobs are going to have to start paying rent in order to stay in shelters, according to city officials. “Open-ended handouts, we know, don’t work,” Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs said. “This is not a moneymaker. We’re not doing this to close budget gaps. It’s really the principles … involved.” Shelter residents will have to pay up to 44 percent of their income in the first year of the program: a family of three making $10,000 will have to pay only $36 a month, but a family of the same size making $25,000 will owe the city $926 per month.
