Vatican: Pope May Apologize for Handling of Abuse Cases

Having already expressed repeatedly his shame and regret over the devastating trend of child abuse from Catholic priests, the AP reports that Pope Benedict XVI is considering actually apologizing for the Church’s handling of the abuse cases. In June, there will be a meeting of world clergy, and Cardinal William Levada, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, says Benedict might address the issue, and point to the U.S. policy of dealing with abuse as a model for bishops elsewhere. “It’s a big crisis. I think no one should try to diminish that,” the cardinal said, though he blamed “a certain media bias” for keeping the story alive.
