Congressman Admits Affair, Yet Blames Washington for Resignation

Republican Mark Souder, an eight-term congressman from Indiana you’ve never heard of until today, announced his resignation this morning after admitting to a “mutual relationship” with a “part-time staffer.” Souder is one of those “family values” congressmen, one who voted to constitutionally ban gay marriage and claims, in the “Family Issues” section of his website, to be “committed to preserving traditional marriage.” You know — one man, one woman, one part-time staffer. In his statement today, Souder said he’s “sinned against God, my wife and my family,” and that he must “bear the responsibility.” But he also blamed his resignation on “the poisonous environment of Washington, D.C.,” where “any personal failing is seized upon, often twisted, for political gain.” Right, well, there doesn’t need to be a lot of twisting here, Souder. You slept with your staffer. It’s pretty straightforward.

Update: As commenter JA2009 points out, Souder once filmed a video about abstinence with his mistress, which is awesome.
