‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Maneuvering Gets More Frantic

Yesterday, Robert Gates issued a lukewarm statement supporting the recently reached compromise on “don’t ask, don’t tell,” but pointing out that he wished a congressional vote would come after the Pentagon had the chance to complete its review in December. Meanwhile, House Armed Services Chair Ike Skelton, a Democrat, says he opposes the repeal and asks his fellow congressmen to do so, too — though it’s too late for his committee to do anything about it. The full House will vote on the issue tomorrow as part of a military spending bill. Meanwhile, with conservative Democrat Ben Nelson’s vote safely secured by repeal advocates, it looks like the Senate Armed Services committee has enough votes to pass the measure, after which it will go before the whole Senate.
