George Huguely, a University of Virginia men’s lacrosse player, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Yeardly Love, a women’s lacrosse player at the school. Police were called to Love’s off-campus apartment around 2:15 a.m. Monday morning about a “potential alcohol overdose,” where they found “signs of violence” (the cause of death has not been released). A Charlotteville police chief said the two athletes — both 22 years old — had dated, but it was unclear what the most recent status of their relationship had been. [NYT, NYP]
