Massive Oil Plumes Discovered Under Gulf

As nasty and scary as the oil floating on top of the Gulf of Mexico is, things are only worse underneath. That became clear once again yesterday when scientists discovered massive oil plumes floating underwater, including one that’s ten miles long, three miles wide, and 300 feet thick. The plumes, which deplete the oxygen in the water, are threatening to kill off much of the sea life around them. Meanwhile, BP’s latest plan to stem the flow of oil into the Gulf with a mile-long tube that would siphon it to a tanker is still not working. [NYT]
