A week after the Times broke a story about Connecticut Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal’s history of exaggerating his military service during the Vietnam War, the Democrat explicitly apologized for the first time in a statement last night to the Hartford Courant. “I have firmly and clearly expressed regret and taken responsibility for my words. I have made mistakes and I am sorry.” Meanwhile, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Tim Kaine, didn’t really help the party cause yesterday when he said on ABC’s This Week that Blumenthal’s “statements were wrong, period.” With friends like these, eh?
