In a oddly timed announcement, the Obama administration is set to reveal tomorrow that it has cut anti-terror funds for New York City. The Department of Homeland Security informed New York officials yesterday that grants for mass transit security will be cut 27 percent (down to $111 million this year), and port security funds will be dropped by 25 percent (down to $33.8 million). Coming less than two weeks after the attempted Times Square car bombing, the cuts have raised the ire of Mayor Bloomberg, Sen. Schumer and others.
“For the administration to announce these cuts two weeks after the attempted Times Square bombing shows they just don’t get it and are not doing right by New York City on anti-terrorism funding,” Schumer said. “Instead of distributing funding all over the country, they should focus their attention where the greatest threat exists — right here in New York.”
Obama will be visiting NYPD headquarters on Thursday afternoon to personally meet with officers to thank them for their efforts in managing the May 1 bomb scare.
