Karzai Orders Shake-up at the Top in Afghanistan

In a fairly dramatic move, Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai has demanded that two of the country’s top three security officials resign. State interior minister Hanif Atmar and intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh were on the receiving end of a two-hour dressing-down from Karzai last week for failing to thwart attacks. NATO appears to have been somewhat blindsided by the move, one official claiming the organization had a good “working relationship” with the two men, and another telling the Times that this decision is actually counterproductive to “what we’re trying to do right now” in the country.
