Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga became international symbols for gay rights after they were sentenced to fourteen years in prison in Malawi for being gay and seeking to marry. After international pressure (and a little help from gay icon Madonna!), the couple was freed last month on “humanitarian grounds.” But now, the couple has broken up and 26-year-old Monjeza has taken up with a woman, saying that after all the trauma, he no longer wants to be associated with homosexuality.
