New York’s Secret Purpose: Supplying the Rest of the States With Governors

According to a study by the University of Minnesota’s Smart Politics blog examining how many governors have been born in another state, New York “exports” more governors to other states than anyone else. In other words, over the course of American history, a native New Yorker has become a governor of another state once every 1.9 years. The study doesn’t offer a theory (besides its large population) for why so many New Yorkers become governors elsewhere, but perhaps Frank Sinatra wasn’t just rhyming words when he sang that if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. Or maybe it’s that many New Yorkers considering careers in politics just have no interest in running this state, and who can blame them?

Another interesting fact is that more Idaho governors have been born in Iowa than in Idaho. Ha! Oh, Idaho.
