Rand Paul Will ‘Never’ Answer Questions About Made-up Ophthalmology Certification

Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul says that he’s a board-certified ophthalmologist, but the group that certified him is one that he founded in 1999 and runs himself, and it isn’t recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, the “national clearinghouse for such certifications.” This doesn’t mean that Paul is unqualified to shoot your eyes with lasers, and frankly, when someone has such radical beliefs on the role of government, this kind of thing seems like small potatoes. But still, Paul basically certified himself under unknown standards. That’s maybe something worth explaining. Or … not.

The Courier-Journal began seeking comment from Paul Tuesday. When the newspaper tried to interview him at two Louisville events Saturday, he wouldn’t comment.

I’m not going to go through all that right now,” Paul said while at the Great Eastern National Gun Day Show and JAG Military Show, in Louisville.

Asked when he would talk, Paul said: “Uh, you know, never. … What does this have to do with our election?”

What does this have to do with our election?” You’re running in it?

Update: Apparently “never” means “very soon.” Paul has released an explanation of why he created his own ophthalmology certification board, and it’s all very boring.
