Terrorist Suspects Taken Into Custody at JFK

Before they could board their separate flights to Egypt, two New Jersey residents believed to be on their way to join al-Shabaab, a jihadist group in Somalia, were taken into custody by teams of state and federal law-enforcement agents at JFK International Airport last night. According to CNN, the residents, Mohamed Hamoud Alessa, 20, of North Bergen, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, 26, of Elmwood Park, have been charged in a federal criminal complaint with “conspiring to kill, maim and kidnap persons outside the United States” and will appear Monday before a U.S. magistrate judge. The U.S. Attorney’s office said the arrests did not relate to “any known immediate threat to the public or active plot against the United States.” The FBI says JFK was “not at risk.” [CNN, New Jersey Star Ledger]
