Yes, Bernard Goldberg, We Will Take Your Hillary Bet

Fox News commentator and author of multiple liberal-bashing books Bernard Goldberg has provided the latest baseless speculation on the political future of Hillary Clinton today. In a posting on his website entitled “Wanna Bet?,” Goldberg writes:

I am predicting right here, right now, that Hillary Clinton will run for president in 2012 — yes 2012 — challenging President Obama for their party’s nomination.

Goldberg spends the majority of the post detailing the many unpopular decisions Obama has made and the sorry state of the economy. Nobody would disagree that President Obama isn’t as popular as he once was or would like to be. But what does that have to do with Hillary? She would allow the liberals to abandon “the black guy” without feeling too bad about it, because she is a woman. Woman or black — neither are white men, and that is the No. 1 priority for liberals.

If things don’t improve, independents, who switch back and forth from one party to another all the time, will have no trouble abandoning President Obama next time around. Blacks won’t, of course, and that poses a real problem to any challenger. White liberals would never forsake America’s first black president, either — at least not to vote for some other Democrat who looks like Walter Mondale or Michael Dukakis or Al Gore or John Kerry. But Hillary gives them the opportunity to assuage their white liberal guilt — and — bonus! — make history all over again. They can drop the black guy and vote for someone they hope will be the first woman president of the United States and still hang on to their precious liberal credentials.

Another reason the Democrats won’t abandon Obama for Hillary, aside from his blackness: Eighty one percent of them approve of the job he’s doing. And a contentious primary between the two would fatally damage the victor and tear the party apart. And Hillary has never come close to indicating that she’d be up for it. And no president has tried and failed to win renomination by his party since Chester A. Arthur in 1884. And Hillary isn’t crazy. So yes, name a dollar amount, and we will take your bet.
