Lehman Brothers Auctions Off Souvenirs From the Recession

Disaster capitalism diversifies into memorabilia. Christie’s will hold an auction next month in London to sell the discards from Lehman Brothers’ European offices in an effort to pay off its $613 billion tab. Up for grabs are the plaque commemorating the opening of the building (what an auspicious day!), tea caddies, cigar boxes, paintings by Gary Hume and Lucian Freud, and “a selection of maritime and sporting paintings.” The auctioneers are hoping some of the fame from helping to trigger the recession will rub off on the merchandise. “There are many people around the world who would like to acquire some art with a Lehman connection,” said Barry Gilbertson, whose firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, is administrating the auction.
