Folk hero Steven Slater was released from jail in the Bronx Tuesday night after posting his $2,500 bail. Slater did not have much to say to the gathered throng of reporters upon his release, stating only that he “greatly appreciated” the support he has received. He then took off in an awaiting car and reporters were said to have followed after him. NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly, who clearly isn’t going to be joining any Slater-championing Facebook groups anytime soon, said it “appears” Slater quit in dramatic fashion Monday: “It’s a strange way to quit, let’s put it that way,” Kelly said. “I don’t think he’ll be able to come back.” Slater’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 7.
