When You’re the President, You Don’t Have to Wait for Jonathan Franzen’s New Novel to Come Out

President Obama made the first public foray of his Martha’s Vineyard vacation today with a trip to a local bookstore, where the Obama girls picked out “some titles from the The Land of Elyon series,” The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, John Steinbeck’s The Red Pony, and Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. And Obama wanted Jonathan Franzen’s highly anticipated new novel Freedom — which New York’s Sam Anderson calls “a work of total genius” — but it doesn’t come out until August 31. Fortunately for Obama, he is the president, and the owner of the bookstore sold him an advance copy. [Cape Cod Times, Political Punch/ABC News]
