When Kentucky Republican Rand Paul was in college, he smoked pot, paid homage to a deity named “Aqua Buddha,” and belonged to a secret society that published newsletters making fun of the bible. His Democratic opponent, Attorney General Jack Conway, decided that there are no atheist swing voters in Kentucky and aired the following ad:
In tonight’s debate, Conway, who is slightly behind Paul in the polls, refused to back down. “Why did he freely join a group known for mocking or making fun of people of faith?,” he said. “And secondly, when is it ever a good idea to tie up a woman and ask her to kneel before a false idol called Aqua Buddha?”
Paul called him a liar and asked back, “How ridiculous are you? You embarrass this race.”
In other news, Paul has said he would repeal the entire health-care bill, keep all the Bush tax cuts, and said Social Security was constitutional (even though he wants to change it).
