life-changing moments

Elderly Manhattan Couple Polarizes the Queen Mary

Sometimes, seemingly minor incidents can have a major impact on a person. Maybe your hands appeared on the cover of a best-selling book, and you’ve been hungry for fame ever since. Maybe you went on one lousy date with a witch, and yet it comes back to haunt you when you find yourself in the middle of a public discourse on the future of the GOP. Or, worst of all, maybe you were thrown off a $20,000 luxury cruise a few days earlier than expected after shouting obscenities at fellow passengers during a black-tie dinner. Now that changes people, says the Manhattan couple it happened to, Broadway producer Gloria Sher, 82, and her husband, Frederick Evans, 91. “I was treated with no respect and unbelievably rude and shockingly terrible,” Sher said. “I’ve been sick ever since. It has ruined our lives. It’s changed us forever.” Wow. So how did things on the Queen Mary 2 go so, so wrong?

Then the Shers were forced to stay in their room for a few days until the ship docked in New York, though they reportedly sneaked out. But the incident rocked the whole boat: Some people say Sher is a belligerent drunk and a known liar, so her story can’t be trusted. Others are outraged! But there are fewer of those people, besides the Shers. Mostly it’s just Gloria. The real point here is that at any moment, your life can change forever, and you, too, can end up on the cover of the New York Post.
