So We’re Going to Have a New Family Single Guy in the Governor’s Mansion Tomorrow

At ten o’clock tonight, Andrew Cuomo will be sworn in as governor of the state of New York, with the role officially becoming his at midnight. With him at the swearing in will be his father, the former governor, his mother, his ABC News anchor brother, Chris Cuomo, his kids (who split their time between Cuomo and their mother), and his celebrity cook girlfriend, Sandra Lee. They’ll reunite at the 135-year-old governor’s mansion, where Cuomo lived as a boy while his father was in office — surely an emotional moment. According to the Times, Lee will play only the most minor of roles in Albany, instead remaining in New York City to focus on her business and refusing to accept a state security detail or other services at the expense of tax dollars. (Cuomo will be the first unmarried governor since Hugh Carey in the seventies.)

Still, Lee wrote on her blog recently, “This year will be the most special New Year of all. My sweetheart will be sworn in as the Governor of the State of New York at midnight. To us, it’s a countdown to start working on making NY state and our country a better place.” She also wrote, “Part of that is making your friends and family happy — being festive of mind and heart. If you’re throwing a countdown party … for cocktails, serve my elegant Pom Blanco and Champagne Sabayon. Pass around Caprese Mozzarella Salad Bites and Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese Tarts for fast finger food.”

One person didn’t have such sweet (and delicious) words of welcome for Cuomo: Outgoing governor David Paterson wrote a fiery op-ed that appeared in the Daily News today, warning that the country’s pension plans are facing another crisis. “No one will be immune if the public pension funds suffer a meltdown. It will have a devastating ripple effect, straining already underfunded government programs due to increased caseload and taking badly needed spending out of an economy that needs every penny of it,” he wrote. “It is incredible and unfortunate that many still refuse to recognize that another financial disaster awaits. Have we learned nothing?”

Welcome, Governor Cuomo!
