Could Ron Wyden’s Cancer Endanger the Democratic Agenda?

Democratic senator Ron Wyden has just announced that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late November and is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday. The cancer was discovered early and Wyden expects “a full and speedy recovery,” which is obviously great. And though his health is certainly the most important thing, the timing here isn’t ideal as it relates to the Democratic legislative agenda. Wyden says he’ll have to miss votes tomorrow and possibly next week while preparing for and undergoing the procedure, a time period that may coincide with votes on New START, the omnibus spending bill, and the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” giving the Democrats even less margin for error on what are already expected to be very close votes.
