Elaine Kaufman’s Apartment Is on the Market

Though the eponymous restaurant that legendary restaurateur Elaine Kaufman left behind when she died in early December will continue to dish out comfort food on the Upper East Side in the hands of general manager Diane Becker, Elaine’s penthouse apartment is in need of a new owner. The two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath officially went on the market today through Brown Harris Stevens’s Kathy Sloane. The asking price: $2.995 million. Perched atop a co-op building just two blocks south and a block-and-a-half east of Elaine’s, the apartment has a wood-burning fireplace, a wraparound terrace and views of the East River. In a 2009 interview and slideshow published in the New York Times, friends dubbed it Kaufman’s “fortress of solitude,” a place where she relaxed by watching Westerns. You can see her affection for the genre in her decorating choices.
