There Is a Mysterious Green Blob in Outer Space — And It’s Alive

Yesterday, NASA released new photos from the Hubble Space Telescope of Hanny’s Voorwerp, which reveal that the glowing green blob of mostly hydrogen gas, roughly the size of our own Milky Way galaxy, is “strangely alive.” But before you chalk this up to the final sign of the apocalypse, it actually sounds rather harmless — and kinda angsty. Bill Keel, the astronomer who explained the phenomenon, said that parts of the blob are collapsing and that pressure makes “very lonely newborn stars” that are “in the middle of nowhere.” Just floating, in the black sky, some 650 million light years away, listening to that Strokes song from the Somewhere preview on repeat. Quick, someone get this blob a Tumblr. [HuffPo]
