After serving only one term, Virginia senator Jim Webb, a Democrat, announced today that he’s “decided to return to the private sector … and will not seek reelection in 2012.” The announcement is not really a surprise Webb had raised a measly $12,000 in the final quarter of 2010, has been openly ambivalent recently about running for a second term, and faced a tough rematch with former senator George Allen. There’s speculation that DNC chairman and former Virginia governor Tim Kaine might now be pressured to run for the seat, since he seems like the party’s best shot.
