Mike Huckabee is still trying to explain his comments from last week about President Obama growing up in Kenya, er, Indonesia, where the presence of madrassas made him hate the British for colonizing Kenya, or something. As he said in yet another talk radio interview today:
The interesting thing, the reaction ranged from, ‘This guy is so dumb he doesn’t know that Barack Obama grew up in Indonesia not Kenya,’ all the way to the other extreme. I saw people like Andrea Mitchell saying, ‘Oh no, he did this on purpose, he is very smart and shrewd, he did this in a calculating way.’ Well Tim, I can’t be both. I can’t be the dumbest guy in the room and the smartest guy in the room at the same time. I have to be one or the other, or maybe it’s just that I made a mistake and I corrected it, which is exactly what it was.
Actually, pretty much everyone who criticized Huckabee believed the latter scenario — that he was, without breaking the birtherism taboo, very purposefully ingratiating himself to the right-wing voters/book buyers who don’t feel that President Obama is truly American. That’s not the same as being “the smartest guy in the room,” though. Just the most deceitful.
