The Japan Disaster Claims Its First American Victim

Tracy Taylor Anderson, a 24-year-old Virginia woman who had been living in Japan and working as a teacher at the Ishinomaki elementary school, in Ishinomaki, Japan, is the first named American victim of the Japanese earthquake. Anderson was last spotted riding away from the elementary school after making sure that every child had been picked up by their parents — and was likely swept away in the tsunami that hit minutes after the earthquake. The Randolph-Macon College graduate had lived in Japan since 2008, and taught in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. There is another American man who is missing and presumed dead, but he has yet to be named.
