At the Tribeca Film Festival screening of Detachment, Blythe Danner, one of the stars, begged us not to ask her about the movie because she hadn’t yet seen it. The film is about a substitute teacher who is assigned to a failing school, so, thinking quickly, we inquired as to what kind of student her Oscar-winning actress/model/cook/author/blogger/recording artist daughter, Gwyneth Paltrow, had been. “She was a pistol. She was extremely bright and a handful, but she was a brilliant, brilliant girl and still is,” replied Danner. Aha, a pistol? A handful? So Gwyneth Paltrow was not a straight-A student? “Sometimes. I mean, it was up and down. You know, she also had a lot of fun playing hooky.” Playing hooky! Finally, evidence that Gwyneth Paltrow is not perfect. “But when she did play hooky, she went to, like, MoMA. She always went to a great [place]; she was always curious and loved art,” Danner added. Sigh.
