Mayor Bloomberg on Dominique Strauss-Kahn: ‘If You Don’t Want to Do the Perp Walk, Don’t Do the Crime’

Mayor Bloomberg sounded almost Giuliani-esque when he defended the NYPD’s decision to have IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn — known back home as “the Hot Rabbit” — do a “perp walk” for allegations that he raped a maid at a Times Square hotel. Bloomberg fired back at French critics saying:

I think it is humiliating, but if you don’t want to do the perp walk, don’t do the crime,” adding, “I don’t have a lot of sympathy for that.”

We’re sure he meant to preface that statement with some version of “innocent until blah blah guilty blah.” Bloomberg also said he supported the judge’s decision to put the man heralded as a frontrunner for the French presidency in a cell in Rikers without bail.

“He would be the kind of person who has a good chance of fleeing and France does not have an extradition treaty with the United States,” Bloomberg said.

The AP reports that Strauss-Kahn — a man known to end his Blackberry messages with not one, but two smiley face emoticons — is under suicide watch as pressure intensifies for him to step down as head of the IMF. Tim Geithner said he is “obviously not in the position to run the IMF.” Despite European attempts to defend their hold on the agency’s top job, Geithner called for the board to formally recognize John Lipsky, an American and the IMF’s official no. 2, as the interim chief.

Meanwhile, DSK might want to find a way to get comfortable at Rikers: Reuters reports it might take more than six months for his trial to begin.
