On Sunday, the blogger “A Gay Girl in Damascus” was revealed to be Tom MacMaster, a white, married grad student in Scotland. Today comes yet another lesbian-related revelation: “Paula Brooks,” editor of the popular lesbian news site Lez Get Real, a website with the tagline “A Gay Girl’s View on the World,” acknowledged that he is, in fact, Bill Graber, a 58-year-old former military man in Ohio. Over the weekend, as Internet sleuths hunted for clues about Gay Girl’s real identity, Brooks came under review as a possible suspect, and the Washington Post got it out of him today. So why would a 58-year-old retired construction worker assume the identity of a hot young lesbian? The Post reports:
Ah, yes: Why rally for the “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal as the experienced and respected military man you are when you can instead orchestrate an elaborate ruse and develop a second life as a popular online lesbian? Just what the military needed. Of course. And yes: Graber, the fake lesbian, corresponded — and “flirted with,” by his own account — Tom MacMaster, the other fake lesbian, neither of the men realizing the other was pretending to be a lesbian, which sounds suspiciously like the premise of a possible “Modern Love” entry.
