California Assembly Passes Bill Requiring Gay History’s Inclusion in Textbooks

A landmark bill requiring gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people to be added to the list of social and ethnic groups that public schools must include in social-studies lessons, already passed by the California Senate, passed in the California Assembly on Tuesday by a 49-25 vote.

During the reportedly spirited debate, openly gay San Francisco assemblyman Tom Ammiano told his colleagues, “I don’t want to be invisible in a textbook.” San Bernardino assemblyman Tim Donnelly countered with the always-moving argument, “As a Christian, I am deeply offended,” and, for good measure, posited that the bill is promoting “the homosexual agenda.” The bill has now been sent to Governor Jerry Brown, a 73-year-old Democrat who has twelve days to sign or veto the measure, on which he has not commented.
