Midtown Traffic to Maybe Get Somewhat Less Horrible

Someday, sophisticated computer systems and “microwave sensors” will control every facet of our lives. But for now, they’ll be managing traffic in midtown Manhattan as part of a $1.6 million project called Midtown in Motion, which will allow “Department of Transportation engineers to conduct real-time analysis and change signal patterns at the touch of a button, helping to alleviate congestion before it worsens.” If it works in midtown the system will be deployed citywide, and hopefully the machines will not rebel and permanently set all the lights to red, or worse, green.
