Today in national elections Thai voters rejected the country’s military-backed government, which has kept a tight hold on the country since toppling former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a 2006 coup. The victorious Pheu Thai party, led by Thaksin’s younger sister Yingluck Shinawatra, has been riding a wave of popular anger at the current regime, which last year led a bloody crackdown against pro-Thaksin protests. It still waits to be seen what the Thai army thinks of these results — and whether it will recognize them — but for now it seems like Yingluck, who has a master’s degree from Kentucky State University in the U.S., is set to be Thailand’s first female prime minister.
