It is, in fact, how Fox News covered Obama’s birthday. The
subtle racial coding of this presentation might lead you to believe that this was an all-black gathering, but in fact, there are a few other people Fox could have highlighted. From Fox’s own rundown of attendants:
Now, again, you might not realize it from the headline, but none of the live performers were actually hip-hop artists. Jay-Z came strictly as a guest. According to Fox’s own story, there were performances by “R&B singer Ledisi, and Herbie Hancock. Stevie Wonder came up at the end and sang a medley ending in ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.’” So where does the hip-hop part come in? Well, “DJ Cassidy played Motown, hip hop, and ’70s and ’80s R&B.” Which is basically like every white person’s wedding ever, by the way.
