Virginia Tech on High Alert After Witnesses Report Gunman

The Virginia Tech campus was locked down just after 9 a.m. this morning when “three juveniles attending a camp at the university reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair … holding what may have been a handgun,” according to an alert on the university website. The “weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort” as the individual moved toward the volleyball courts, the witnesses said, but the school’s alert has since been updated: “Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious.” Law enforcement is still patrolling the campus in search of the suspect and individuals were told to remain indoors.

Virginia Tech was the site of a 2007 campus shooting that killed 32 people and wounded dozens more, and for that tragedy was “fined by the Department of Education earlier this year for waiting too long to notify students,” as reported by the New York Times.
