Most of the coverage of last night’s 60 Minutes story on the NYPD’s counter-terrorism efforts has focused on Commissioner Ray Kelly’s assertion that his force has the “equipment and the training” to take down an airplane. What most people aren’t talking about is that the NYPD’s camera system in lower Manhattan is so sophisticated that it can tell when someone has placed a bag or package on the ground, track how long it’s been there, and alert the police. If you see something, say something — but if you don’t, an omnipresent computer will.
