152,000 NYC Schoolchildren Might Need a Ride

Imagine Occupy Wall Street multiplied by more than ten and made up entirely of kids running wild in the city. Hey, it could happen: New York City Schools chancellor Dennis Walcott sent a letter to local principals and parents today warning them of the “strong possibility of an immediate, systemwide strike” by yellow-school-bus drivers, whose union is planning to order a walkout. A new contract is currently in the works and the bus drivers want job protections. No date has been set, but Walcott called the threat “nothing short of shameful.” Mayor Bloomberg tried to be reassuring: “If and when a strike should happen we’re going to do everything possible to help parents who rely on school buses to get their children to school safely.” It’s getting them home we’re worried about.
