The man who confessed to the Norwegian massacre that resulted in the deaths of 77 people and injury of 151 has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, according to a new psychiatric report. Doctors believe Breivik was in a psychotic state during the July 22 attacks and that he was also insane during his thirteen subsequent meetings with two psychiatrists, who concluded that Breivik lived in his “own delusional universe where all his thoughts and acts are guided by his delusions.” The report is to be reviewed by a panel, but if approved, could mean that Breivik will not face his scheduled April 16 trial date and will be detained in psychiatric care rather than receiving a standard jail sentence. “The most important thing in our clients’ opinion is that he will not be able to walk the streets,” said lawyer John Christian Elden. Before Breivik planted a car bomb and went on a prolonged shooting spree at a youth camp, he published a manifesto online (much of it plagiarized) about defending Europe from Muslim invasion and “cultural Marxists.” He said his attacks were brutal, but “necessary.”
