Long Island, along with New Jersey, Alaska, and the entirety of the South, is one of America’s most popular geographical punching bags. But senator Chuck Schumer did not take kindly to an unflattering quip about Long Island from his Republican colleague John McCain today. Referring to a legal case, McCain, on the Senate floor, joked: >
“Isn’t it true that Justice O’Connor was specifically referring to a case for a person captured on Long Island? Last I checked, Long Island was part — albeit sometimes regrettably — part of the United States of America.”
First Meghan McCain bashing Brooklyn, now this? What is it with these McCains hating on the New York metropolitan region? Are they jealous because we enjoy luxuries like occasional rainfall? Probably.

Anyway, it was a pretty harmless joke. But not to Schumer, who reminded McCain that some Long Islanders died on 9/11, forever shielding Long Island from all insults. “@SenJohnMcCain,” he tweeted, “All of America saw how heroic Long Islanders were on 9/11. #LongIsland deserves an apology.”
McCain, clearly touched, soon responded with about as facetious an apology as he could muster:

Roll CallSchumer, fortunately, did not did respond by dipping back into the 9/11 well. Instead he replied, once again on Twitter, “NYers can take a joke. But if @SenJohnMcCain wants to mock parts of America, stick to Arizona.” Why would McCain make fun of his own state, though? We know there are no 9/11 heroes there, but still.
