NYC Might Stop Punishing Drivers With Extra-Sticky Stickers

The totally immature but probably pretty effective strategy used by the Department of Sanitation to shame alternate-side parking violators has, since 1988, been to splat offending cars with a neon yellow sticker that’s almost impossible to get off. (There’s also the $35 or $65 fine.) But a new City Council bill would get rid of the “garish sticker” — an “unnecessary double punishment,” according to one councilman — in some neighborhoods, or at least replace them with ones that peel right off. The city reportedly uses about 400 of the ungodly markers a day, and has so far failed to acknowledge the damage a change would do to the goo-remover market.
