What’s most perplexing about the new Mitt Romney campaign ad that takes an Obama remark as out-of-context as humanly possible — presenting it as Obama’s own remark, when Obama was actually quoting something the McCain campaign said — is that there are plenty of easy, factual ways to criticize the Obama presidency without relying on shameless deception. For example: The economy sucks! Unemployment is high! The debt is deeper than ever before! So why lie? It just seems gratuitously underhanded.
Not to mention, does Romney really want set this precedent? He’s susceptible to the same kind of sliming. The Obama campaign may never stoop that low, but they could, if they wanted to. In fact, Think Progress found some examples already:
