It’s Been an Election Season Full of Kardashians

In 2008, John McCain famously compared Barack Obama to Paris Hilton, a dig that was meant to instantly telegraph not just unserious celebrity, but The Ultimate Reprehensible, Roundly-Hated-By-All-Upstanding-Americans-Unserious Celebrity. But no lucky girl can hold that crown forever! And it’s become very clear in recent days that poor Paris has been replaced by the more currently reviled Kardashians.

Yesterday, Mitt Romney dinged Barack Obama with “I’ve been looking at some video clips on YouTube of President Obama — then candidate Obama — going through Iowa making promises. The gap between his promises and his performance is the largest I’ve seen, well, since the Kardashian wedding and the promise of ‘til death do we part.” Also, his mascara totally looked like Kim’s — so tacky! Previously, an anti-Newt Gingrich attack ad called Newt “the Kim Kardashian of the GOP.” (Maybe it’s the junk in the trunk?)

Jon Huntsman, by virtue of the fact that his daughter once went on a date with Kris Humphries, has smartly guarded himself against the insult — nothing came of the date, sure, but the Huntsman family is clearly not in the Kardashian Kamp in that breakup. Perhaps that’ll serve him well in 2016.

But poor Rick Perry was slow on the uptake on this one: Way back in September, at Fashion Week in New York, he reportedly made a beeline to chat with Kendell Jenner, Kim’s younger stepsister.  Perhaps that Kardashian tie is the real reason he’s fallen so far behind.
