Can’t say we’re shocked. But the ridership decline has been sharp, even during this relatively mild winter. As a result, community leaders are pushing for a fare lower than the current $4 rate to pull in more commuters who would otherwise take the subway. Perhaps they would be better served by playing up the fresh-air angle in an ad campaign? It’s too bad smell-o-vision never worked out.
Update: The NYC Economic Development Corp. contacted Intel to clarify that ridership since the ferry service has actually exceeded expectations overall. There have been more than 5500,ooo riders since June 25, versus a projected 409,000.
