Flying Dutchman Uses Custom Birdwings to Soar Over the Hague

A Dutch engineer named, magnificently, Jarno Smeets, built custom wings and achieved flight for a full minute this week. After eight months of research and testing, Smeets used the wings, an Android phone, and Wii controllers to fly, birdlike, above a park in the Hague. Smeet’s grandfather spent much of his life designing a flying bicycle, which the younger Smeets used as inspiration for his own project.

After he landed, Smeets got almost as emotional as the Double Rainbow dude. It was “the best feeling I have felt in my life,” he said.
