The tragic and tangled tale of the Trayvon Martin case just claimed its first city official. Sanford Chief of Police Bill Lee announced moments ago that he will remove himself temporarily from the investigation, saying “my involvement in this matter is overshadowing the process.” Yesterday, Lee had been hit by a vote of no confidence from the city commissioners over his handling of the case: namely, his decision not to arrest shooter George Zimmerman. Sanford police said that Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense “was supported by physical evidence and testimony.”
At 7 p.m. this evening Reverend Al Sharpton will lead a rally for Trayvon, despite having learned just hours ago of the death of his elderly mother. Some 20,000 people are expected to attend the event.
