George Zimmerman’s Lawyers Quit Because They Can’t Get a Hold of Him

Lawyers for Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman explained in a bizarre press conference this afternoon that they haven’t spoken to their client since Sunday and can therefore no longer represent him. Hal Uhrig and Craig Sonner said that they’ve “lost touch” with Zimmerman, who they said is in hiding — not in Florida — and is “not doing well emotionally.” Sonner said he still believes Zimmerman acted in self-defense, but did not make the man look very reliable: “He’s not returning my texts, he’s not returning my e-mails, he won’t even give me a collect call.”

Referring to news coverage of the case, the attorney said Zimmerman “watches more of this every day than he should.” He’s also acting without their permission: Zimmerman supposedly called the special prosecutor’s office today sans representation, as well as Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who the lawyers said is “not even willing to tell us what our client told him.”

Uhrig and Sonner have been representing Zimmerman, who has not been arrested or charged, pro bono, and say they’ve never met him face-to-face. The pair said they could possibly continue to work with him in the future, but first he needs to return their calls. Zimmerman recently launched a website to take donations for his legal defense, but that too he did without telling the lawyers. “Him setting up his own website, that’s fine,” Sonner said. “I wish he would’ve communicated that with me.”
