All day, as the first of what will be many annoying and irrelevant general-election brouhahas raged across our TV screens and Twitter feeds, the nation wondered: Where does President Obama stand on this issue? Does he think stay-at-home moms deserve to be applauded or belittled? Finally, we have our answer to this most pressing question. And it’s the … former!
“There’s no tougher job than being a mom,” Obama said in an interview with KCRG, the ABC affiliate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Anybody who would argue otherwise, I think, probably needs to rethink their statement.”
What about one of those guys in Cirque de Soleil who has to balance four people on his big toe while rotating on a pedestal? That seems next to impossible. Anyway …
“My general view is those of us who are in the public life, we’re fair game. Our families are civilians,” Obama continued. “I haven’t met Mrs. Romney, but she seems like a very nice woman who is supportive of her family and supportive of her husband. I don’t know if she necessarily volunteered for this job so, you know, we don’t need to be directing comments at them.”
And, he added, there’s plenty for the candidates to brawl over: “I think me and Governor Romney are going to have more than enough to argue about during the course of this campaign.”
That’s true. For example, the next major Obama–Romney spat will revolve around which candidate is the bigger fan of women’s golf.
