Brooklyn Alchemist Turned Manhole Covers Into Cocaine, Heroin

The Great Missing Manhole Cover Mystery of 2012 has been solved, and the explanation is exactly what you expected: Police say that 46-year-old Andrew Modica of Brooklyn, who was arrested yesterday and charged with the thefts, was selling the lids as scrap metal to feed his crack, cocaine, and heroin habits.
