On Thursday, 14-year-old Snigdha Nandipati of San Diego won the Scripps National Spelling Bee by nailing “guetapens,” a French word for ambush or trap. It’s certainly an impressive feat, but perhaps the biggest star to come out of this year’s competition was 6-year-old Lori Anne Madison, the youngest competitor ever. She missed the semifinals because she was sleepy and stressed (and only 6), but confirmed our suspicions about competitive spelling. “Overall, it was just boring. Really boring! Really boring!” she said.
